What the f is the big deal about OS 7? I know its a better more fluid redesign of the apple os but all the features they are raving about have been in android for a long time. Like the "command center" crap. Android has always done that!

I'm still waiting for Motorola to actually update their existing devices to 4.3. Actually right now even 4.2. And this isn't an old phone. Its a Razr Maxx HD that I got like 4 months ago.

Samsung used to be awful about updating android (see droid charge) but they have made a push of late to address that issue. As an early LTE adopter HTC has earned a special spot in my heart with the Thunderbolt and the running gag that was software updates, that phone finally got ice cream sandwich right as the early buyers hit their two years.

Is Verizon partially to blame, I'm sure, but its not enough for me to leave for a different company.

If you like a unified OS across all of your devices, go with iOS, not the 100 splintered version's of android.

iOS is easy to use, and aesthetically pleasing (even though I actually think ios7 takes a step back in that regard.)

That's really all there is to it. Say what you want about apple, they have one hell of a design team and that really captivates some people.

Yup they have good products. Just not my thing. But its my opinion and others can like what they want. They are the best with music players ill give it to them. No competition.

Well iOS hasn't, which is a big deal if you are an Apple user.

Why is it every time anything related to Apple makes the news, all the Android fanbois have to come out of the woodwork and make comments about how they've always had this or that feature, or how they think Android is so much better.

Of course Android fans think it's better. And Apple fans like Apple. The Sun rises in the East, sets in the West, and the Earth orbits around it.

As a Windows Phone user, I'd be happy with most of the features either of those two OSs have.

I'm not really criticizing you, just the constant "war" between OS camps. Both have their fans. Neither is perfect. Just fucking use your device and shut up already.

:p

Verizon is definitely to blame. They are consistently the strictest about devices, like how they haven't had a nexus device in a while. I have a RAZR hd as well and am really hoping the Google partnership leads to 4.3 or if I'm lucky a 4.4 update in the future. Though I'm not holding my breath.

I upgraded to a Razr Maxx HD as well and everytime my nexus tablet gets an android update I just shake my head and hope that Verizon actually gets a Nexus device around the time I'm going to upgrade again.

Everyone at work was mesmerized by their parallax iOS7 effects. They tried to poke fun at my "poor little android" until I had way better effects in about 45 seconds when I installed some live wallpaper...

Meh. Apple is far from perfect, I use a pc at my house but I have an iPhone.

I prefer pc to Mac but the iPhone is decent. At the same time I'm sure I'd be happy with an android device as well.

Hey, it's a major OS update. People will be excited for it, especially for something as big as iOS.

As a WP7 person, I sort of get that the update brings people a lot of excitement. I also get that WP7 won't be supported next year...

I had a 2-year-old RAZR (before Maxx or HD or any other version was released, 'tis the first one) that upgraded to 4.3 already on its own.

If you really don't like Motorola's upgrade policy, just do the update yourself when your warranty runs out. A lot of the times they delay it in hopes that you'll get the new phones (MAXX, Ultra, Mini, Moto X) that were just released.

HTC took forever to release an update for my Thunderbolt. That was the thanks I got for getting one of the first 4g phones. I got tired of it always being just around the corner and ended up rooting the phone. Not sure I would ever go back to HTC.

This is false. Some of the older versions have been cut off from updates and some if they do get the updates, then they do not get everything. It is not unified.

That's because Android, at its core, is designed to be heavily customizable. iOS is designed to only work for apple products only in a certain way. They all have a slightly different look and feel because each one is very easily tweaked to user preferences, the type of phone, the type of user, and all sorts of things like that. No one really cares if their Android looks different from another Android. I bought mine specifically because I could change those things.

The argument that Android was incompatible with other android devices fell through very quickly when Google got integration with all of its systems going on. For example, if you run a Windows or an iOS, computer, and you have Chrome, your bookmarks, history, search data, and passwords can all be brought onto your Android Device's chrome. Google Calender, Now, Youtube, because all of this stuff is stored over the web, it doesn't matter what android you are using. Start it up, log into your google account, and all of your contacts are there, along with even your settings, which can be imported device-to-device.

When it gets down to it, the only reason you want the same, identical OS on every device is if you are not able to differentiate between systems or able to put the time and effort (not much) into customizing the device to work the way you want it (as opposed to the way Apple says you want it).

There are reasons to go with iOS instead of Android, but "unified OS" is no longer one of them, and hasn't been one for a while. The fact that people still believe it though, is a testament to Apple's marketing ability, which relies entirely upon drawing clear distinctions between it and the competitors, carving out an artificial monopoly. It's something that companies used to do in the 60s a lot with brand names. That's why once Apple hit the market, for a year everyone was calling every smart phone "An iPhone". Except that jut a few years before, every smart phone/device was called a "Palm Pilot" even if it wasn't manufactured by Palm.

I think the biggest advantage Android has over Apple right now is the hardware. Most motorola Android phones (starting with the Samsung Galaxy) is light years ahead in both what the phone can do, and how fast it can do it. They are faster, with better memory, longer battery life, and have things like Near Field Communications, local area motion sensing, active notifications, and dedicated voice recognition.

If you don't need/want that, then buy another device, which puts more money into how the phone looks and feels and how comfortable it seems to use, instead of the hardware involved. That's why a lot of people get Apple products, because they are comfortable and require very little 'out of the box' actions to use.

I can't stand their 'easy to use' and 'comfortable' OS. I understand that some people really like it, but for me, the slow animations, large "cute" pictures and low screen optimization makes it come off as very inefficient, taking longer and more resources to do what I want it to do. Then again, I am the absolute opposite of Apple's preferred customer. (Right demographic, wrong mindset).

Yeah I'm definitely conflicted. Aesthetically I dig it. Intellectually it pisses me off sometimes. I'm happy I got rid of my iMac, I can handle and enjoy apple products in small amounts, but when things get more serious ( like actual desktop computer usage) i get frustrated as well.

I have a computer science friend who runs Linux, so he can run either iOS or Windows 7 in a virtual machine when he wants to switch between the two of them. He says its the best of both worlds.

I think he's insane.

I think it's due to the 'special' status some people, mostly Apple owners, publicly give Apple products. Which annoys other people. It's the religious cult like sentiment that irritates. When you've got a Samsung smartphone you call your smartphone a smartphone, when you've got a Nokia smartphone you call your smartphone a smartphone, when you've got a Motorola smartphone you call your smartphone a smartphone, when you've got an Apple smartphone you call your smartphone an iphone . You can substitute the above for computer/mac and MP3-player/ipod. When there's a WP or Android update tech sites discuss it, non-tech sites rightfully don't. When there's an iOs update there's a FP article on Jalopnik and on many other sites. Even if it doesn't offer anything innovative or relevant for a site like Jalopnik.

Yeah, I've been through this before on my Bionic. And my OG Droid. Really, every Moto phone I've had. However, I still like the phone UI enough to deal with it. I probably will root and update it anyway when I get around to it.
